Home At Peace: A Simple Routine for a Cleaner, Calmer Space

Have you ever worked three 12-hour shifts in a row, barely seeing your house except for your shower and bed?
Or spent the day at home with the kids while feeling unwell (or worse, they’re not feeling well)?
Or maybe you’ve been super busy—whether working, having fun, or making memories—leaving laundry, dishes, floors, and bathrooms in disarray?

Chances are, you’re feeling uncomfortable in your own home, just hoping no one drops by.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. You can make your home a haven for you and your family.

I’m starting (or rather, restarting) a Flylady journey. I’ve read all the information and know the routines, as I began 15 years ago. While I haven’t kept every routine, the principles are there to help me avoid living in a mess and missing appointments.

Today feels like a great day to restart. Yesterday was a holiday, so today we can begin to shift focus, leaving the Christmas chaos (or stress) behind. All those boxes and new things still haven’t found a home? No worries. Let’s take some time today to create a more comfortable environment. Even if you’re working more this week, we can do this in small chunks—just 15 minutes at a time.

Here’s a plan for a Home Blessing Hour. Each task should take about 10 minutes.

  1. Vacuum – Start in high-traffic areas. Don’t worry about moving things around.
  2. Dust – Dust around, especially ceiling fans and other spots that people will easily see.
  3. Mop – Focus on high-traffic areas, like the kitchen and entryway. Don’t aim for perfection.
  4. Clean Doors & Mirrors – Wipe down bathroom mirrors and the front door. Use the remaining time to finish up.
  5. Toss Junk Mail – Grab a bag and quickly go through the house to toss any junk mail or trash. Don’t get sidetracked.
  6. Change Sheets – If you have an extra set, change all the beds. If not, aim for just 1 or 2. Be realistic with yourself—will you wash, dry, and remake them?
  7. Take Out the Trash – Collect all trash from every can and take it out.

Just these 7 tasks will help your house feel more peaceful and organized.

I love the simplicity of knocking out one task at a time. It’s amazing how much these small efforts can make a big difference in how your home feels—without spending hours on end.

Take some time to create peace for your mind by creating peace in your environment. Here is my post on conquering your kitchen.
